I am officially going to be blogging again so now all of my family members who lovingly complained about a lack of blog posts can get their way. I'm really excited to have a more updated blog and I hope people will really read posts and want to comment. I may be opinionated, but I love to indulge in ideas that aren't neccesarilly my own.
Anyways, I'll begin with an interesting topic:
Today I went to a free exchange of things. It was a sort of Anarchist event, located in an empty parking lot just outside of Eastown, where you could leave or take whatever items you found. Everybody was constantly bringing items (I made two trips to the house and back to bring more items of my own), or taking items. Books, clothes, candles, vases (useful things that are easy to part with) were very common. There was also some artwork, zines, cds, free bike repairs, etc. It was very great.
Mainly, I thought about how these events are phenominal for the micro-community. People who don't have much money, or are even homeless, or are foreigners, etc. can bring what they don't need and take what they do. Not to mention there is a real sense of comradery and solidarity in the struggle pf life. It's like the people are saying "Fuck the proto-typical American template for capitalism! We're free enough to ignore it on a micro level." It's wonderful!
So, I have a few questions. If this is such an effective and positive thing for a community, why don't these events happen more frequently or in more communities? And, why is it that most garage sales seem to be held more prominantly in suburban communities than urban communities? Is this because of the trends or habits of that community, or is it more of an economic neccesity?
Please say as much in your response as you want. Don't hold anything back.
